The league campaign went to the final day in another nail-bitingly close season for FC Isle of Man.

At the season start, most predicted a battle between the 2 biggest supported clubs in the division, FC Isle of Man and Bury AFC. As expected the season started in this pattern with The Ravens remaining unbeaten for the first 11 games. Warrington Rylands finally defeated The Ravens on 22nd October 2022 in a surprise 4-1 loss.

Both showdowns with Bury AFC were competitive tight affairs both ending in low scoring draws, this made it 5 games now in total that FC Isle of Man had faced Bury AFC and had failed to beat them.

Dropped points saw in January and February 2023 allowed Avro from Oldham creep up into the picture and it took Avro’s 2-0 victory over Bury AFC in March for them to be taken seriously as title contenders. Avro didn’t go away proving to be credible title contenders and with Bury AFC suffering a late season collapse, it went to the final day between The Ravens and Avro with only 1 point separating the 2 clubs in FC Isle of Man’s favour.

The Ravens just required a win on the final day at Kidsgrove Atheltic to win the title. Despite been reduced to 10-men after 20 minutes whilst precariously 1-0 up, striker James Sunderland heroically bagged 4 goals in a surprisingly drama-less afternoon which ended 5-0 to FC Isle of Man. Promotion sealed to the Pitching In Northern League Division 1 North West.

After last season’s adventure, which ended up taking FC Isle of Man taking on Boston United of the Vanarama North in the 2nd Qualifying Round, this season’s effort had to go down as a disappointment.

The journey started well with a packed out Bowl (attendance: 1,363) witnessing The Ravens demolishing Corsham Town 4-0 from the Hellenic Premier Division in late August.

A fortnight later, it was Hailsham Town of the Southern Combination Premier who felt the brunt of a rampant Fc Isle of Man. Midfielder Ollie Patrick taking the spotlight away from the usual suspects Brian Esperance and James Sunderland with a hat-trick of his own in a 5-0 win.

Just 11 Ravens fans made the long journey to Tinsley Lane, Crawley to see FC Isle of Man take on lower league opposition in the form of Oakwood FC. Given their encouraging start to the league season, FC Isle of Man were strong favourites to progress in this tie. But this is the FA Cup, unexpected results occur under the guise of the ‘magic of the cup’. The Non-League Paper used the terrible recently trendy term ‘cupset’ to describe The Ravens 1-0 defeat thanks to an 11th minute goal from Barry O’Reilly. Oakwood managed to keep Brian Esperance especially quiet and he had a rare stinker of a game.

Buildbase FA Vase

08.10.20222nd Qualifying RoundSunderland RCA (A)1-3

The FA Vase offered FC Isle of Man a realistic but tough route to Wembley. Needing to win no less than 10 games to reach the ‘home of English football’, it was always going to be tough but potentially achievable all the same.

Sunderland Ryhope Community Assocition FC were the opponents and a trip out to the North East of England for FC Isle of Man. This part of the world is notoriously a hotbed for successful FA Vase clubs, Whitley Bay (4 times winners), Stockton Town, the list goes on.

In what was easily FC Isle of Man’s worst performance of the season, Sunderland RCA were 3-0 up by 70 minutes before James Sunderland scored a consolation late on for The Ravens. Fittingly, striker James Sunderland scored Fc Isle of Man’s consolation goal that afternoon against his namesakes.

DECLAN DANIELS OF SUNDERLAND RCA MAKES IT 3-0 WITH HIS HEAD

It was the first time FC Isle of Man had failed to overcome the qualifying rounds in this competition and promotion to the Northern League Division One North West in level 8 means FC Isle of Man will be competing in the FA Trophy next season rather than the FA Vase. A fairy tale trip to Wembley is now realistically even further away on the horizon for FC Isle of Man.

25.10.20222nd RoundWarrington Rylands (H)3-1
22.11.20223rd RoundAvro (H)1-2

Following early exits in both the FA Cup and FA Vase, the North West Counties League Challenge Cup, although nowhere near as glamourous as the former, offered The Ravens their sole chance of winning their 1st ever cup competition.

The midweek competition started well with Eccleshall despatched competently in September. Warrington Rylands were overcome in the 2nd Round setting up a 3rd round tie with Avro at The Bowl on 22nd November.

Avro had started the season well and their league perfromances showed they were more than a decent side under manager Steve Welsh. Esperance gave FC Isle of Man an early lead from the penalty spot after an incident which resulted in Avro’s big lump of a centre-back being sent off. Avro showed their mettle and with 10-men battled to victory, Avro’s Connor Hall scoring the winner in the 74th minute.

Supporters’ Player of the Season

BRIAN ESPERANCE | Striker (Centre)

The club captain won the award for the 3rd season in a row. Bagging no less than 6 hat-tricks and 10 braces as he went on to score 56 goals, a new club record for goals in a single season. Also surpassed 100 league goals for the club on 4th March 2023 against Mossley. It’s no surprise the supporters voted for their main man who is fast becoming a club legend.

Supporters’ Young Player of the Season

JAMES SUNDERLAND | Striker (Centre)

Although not quite as prolific on the scoresheet this season compared to his 42 goals he notched last season, James added assists and intelligence to his game. One half of the deadly striker partnership with Brian Esperance, they got 86 goals between them this year.

Goal of the Season

ANDY EVANS v Ashton Town

As one of the younger players trying to make a name for himself, 18 year old Andy Evans did his cause no harm with a rasping long range effort in the 4-0 win over Ashton Town in the North West Counties League Premier Division match on 14th December 2022 at The Bowl.

Andy advanced from the centre circle and played a one-two with left midfielder Craig Wilson. He hit the return 1st time, probably approaching 30 yards out. His venomous shot went like an arrow into the top corner.
