So, we have finally done it, the debut season for FC Isle of Man is now complete, done and dusted. It was 10 years in the making, from dream to reality, to get 11 men competing for the island as one in the English leagues.

Plucked mainly from the Isle of Man domestic amateur league, here is the FC Isle of Man team of the season for 2020/21:

GOALKEEPER | Jordan Davidson

Jordan has lived on the island since he was a child and previously played in the Isle of Man amateur leagues for St.Georges. Joined FC Isle of Man for it’s inaugural season. Made his Ravens debut on 4th November 2020 against Stockport Town.

Young goalkeeper who started the season as 2nd choice behind Edwin Tepperik. Got his opportunity after Tepperik made a succession of howlers against St.Martins which cost The Ravens points. Never looked back from this point and proved to be a reliable figure between the sticks. Kept the most clean sheets in the entire North West Counties League Division 1 South during 2020/21.

RIGHT BACK |Sven Bensmann

Sven moved to the Isle of Man as a child and previously played in the Isle of Man amateur leagues for St.Georges. Joined FC Isle of Man for it’s inaugural season. Made his debut on 4th August 2020 in the club’s first ever game against AFC Wythenshawe Amateurs in the North West Counties League Division 1 South. Scored his first Ravens goal on 12th September 2020 against Ellesmere Rangers.

Chris Bass’s first choice right-back for the season only missing just 2 league games throughout the campaign. Dubbed ‘Mr.Reliable’ or ‘Ronseal’ by his teammates.

CENTRE BACK | Matt Furness

Matt has lived on the Isle of Man since he was a child and previously played in the Isle of Man amateur league for Douglas Royal. Joined FC Isle of Man for it’s inaugural season. Made his debut on 4th August 2021 in the club’s first ever game against AFC Wythenshawe Amateurs in the North West Counties League Division 1 South. Scored the club’s 1st ever goal in competitive football after just 3 minutes in the opening game of the season against AFC Wyhtenshawe Amateurs. Won the North West Counties League Division 1 South in 2020/21.

The 6’7″ tall defender became a firm favourite amongst Ravens fans. A rock at the back whose threat in the air at set pieces is evident by his goal and assist return.

CENTRE BACK | Alex Morris

Began his career in the Wolverhampton Wanderers academy but was released in 2010 having not being able to break into the 1st team. Signed for Hednesford Town in the Northern Premier League where he remained for 5 seasons. Moved to nearby Chasetown before having spells at Romulus, Hinckley and Mickleover Sports. Most recently at Quorn in 2018/19 before being released. Signed for FC Isle of Man on 24th October 2020. Made his Ravens debut later that day in the 3-3 draw with St.Martins in the North West Counties League Division 1 South, becoming the first non-islander to play for the club. Scored his 1st Ravens goal on 9th January 2021 in the 4-3 defeat at Golcar United in the North West Counties League 1st Division Challenge Cup.

Brought in by Bass in October to bolster the defence that had shipped 18 goals in 15 games by that point. At 6’6″ tall made a formidable ‘iron curtain’ like partnership in the centre of defence with fellow giant Matt Furness.

LEFT BACK | Lee McNeil

A native islander who previously played in the Isle of Man amateur leagues for Corinthians. Joined FC Isle of Man for it’s inaugural season. Made his debut on 4th August 2021 in the club’s first ever game against AFC Wythenshawe Amateurs in the North West Counties League Division 1 South.

Young left sided player converted into a full back by Chris Bass throughout the season. A hardworking team player, forever up and down the flanks and supplied a number of assists for his attacking colleagues. Imagine how good he would be if goals were added to his game?

RIGHT MIDFIELD | Kenneth Mohammed

Kenneth moved to the island as a child and previously played in the Isle of Man amateur leagues for Peel. Joined FC Isle of Man for it’s inaugural season. Made his debut on 4th August 2021 in the club’s first ever game against AFC Wythenshawe Amateurs in the North West Counties League Division 1 South. Scored his 1st Ravens goal on 12th December 2020 against Cammel Laird 1907.

Mainly a back-up for Mikey Keogh but profited from Keogh’s injury and ended the season strongly. Scored a key goal on the final day of the season against Stone Old Alleynians which set The Ravens on course for the title.

CENTRE MIDFIELD | Lincoln Nicholls

A native islander who previously played in the Isle of Man amateur leagues for Douglas Athletic. Joined FC Isle of Man for it’s inaugural season. Made his debut on 4th August 2021 in the club’s first ever game against AFC Wythenshawe Amateurs in the North West Counties League Division 1 South. Scored his first Ravens goal on 17th October 2020 against West Didsbury & Chorlton.

Another of the youth contingent who did enough to convince Chris Bass that he was worthy of a place as a regular starter in his starting XI. A creative force in midfield.

CENTRE MIDFIELD | Francis Gerrard

A native islander who previously played in the Isle of Man amateur leagues for St.Marys. Joined FC Isle of Man for it’s inaugural season. Made his debut on 4th August 2021 in the club’s first ever game against AFC Wythenshawe Amateurs in the North West Counties League Division 1 South. Scored his 1st Ravens goal on 12th September 2020 against Ellesmere Rangers.

Steady midfielder who did a consistent job in the centre of midfield, another in the ‘reliable’ bracket. His goal against Vauxhall Motors on 27th October 2020, where he dribbled from his own half before unleashing an unstoppable drive from 27 metres, was voted goal of the season by the supporters.

LEFT MIDFIELD | Paul Main

Paul moved to the Isle of Man as a child and previously played in the Isle of Man amateur leagues for Peel. Became the 1st ever FC Isle of Man player to be sent off during a game on 12th September 2020 against Torrington in the FA Vase 1st Qualifying Round.

A pacey young winger highly rated by Chris Bass. He had a hot temper, which cost him 2 red cards, however Bass re-worded this as ‘youthful enthusiasm’.

STRIKER | Brian Esperance

Brian moved to the Isle of Man as a child and previously played in the Isle of Man amateur leagues for Rushen United. Joined FC Isle of Man for it’s inaugural season. Made his debut on 4th August 2021 in the club’s first ever game against AFC Wythenshawe Amateurs in the North West Counties League Division 1 South. Scored his first Ravens goal on 19th August 2020 in the 4-2 win against Alsager. Voted FC Isle of Man’s Supporters’ Player of the Year for 2020/21. Top goalscorer in 2020/21 with 37 goals in all competitions.

As an aggressive and determined striker was the main focal point in attack for The Ravens. His goal return speaks for itself and was rightly voted Player of the Year by the supporters.

STRIKER | Akeem Smith

Began his career with Nuneaton Borough in the English non-league but didn’t breakthrough into the 1st team. Was released at the end of the 2018/19 season. Had a trial with FC Isle of Man in September 2020 but wasn’t initially signed. Joined FC Isle of Man on 30th Novmber 2020. Made his Ravens debut on 2nd December 2020 against Cheadle Heath Nomads, scoring twice on his debut. Voted Young Player of the Season for 2020/21.

Signed during a striker injury crisis in November 2020 with Brian Esperance sidelined for 2 months. Hit the ground running with a brace on his debut and made the position his own.
